The EU goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80–95% by 2050, presents a vision to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 through a fair transition encompassing all sectors of the economy.
Projects addressed to contributing to achieve the goals foreseen in the EU Energy Roadmap are supported by the Horizon 2020 R&D and innovation programme. H2020 will be substituted by Horizonte Europe, the new R&D an Innovation framework programme that will cover the 2021-2027 period and will account with a budget of €100 billion.

Horizon Europe and the Euratom Research and Training Programme €100 billion proposed budget for 2021-2027 will become the most ambitious research and innovation funding programme ever.

Each euro invested by the programme can potentially generate a return of up to 11 euro of GDP over 25 years. Union investments in R&I are expected to directly generate an estimated gain of up to 100 000 jobs in R&I activities in the ‘investment phase’ (2021-2027).
