BLOCKPLA is a Phase 2 project of the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument (Grant Agreement No. 811532), led by the Spanish company ADBBiocomposites. With a total budget of €1.4 million, the project aimed to develop a new generation of biodegradable packaging materials based on the nanostructuring of polylactic acid (PLA), a bio-based polymer derived from renewable resources.
The innovation centered on enhancing PLA’s barrier properties and mechanical performance through advanced nanostructuring techniques, making it a viable and sustainable alternative to conventional plastic packaging. BLOCKPLA contributes to the circular economy by offering a material that is compostable, scalable, and suitable for high-performance applications in sectors like food, cosmetics, and consumer goods packaging.
