Project focused on using advanced New Plant Breeding Techniques—including CRISPR/Cas9, cis- and intragenesis—to develop Nicotiana tabacum and N. benthamiana varieties optimized as biofactories for high-value proteins and nutraceuticals. With the decline of tobacco farming in Europe, the project aimed to provide farmers alternative income sources by cultivating “Newcotiana” varieties with improved traits like enhanced biosafety, resilience, and product yield. Key outcomes include the generation of elite lines, field trials validating agronomic performance, thorough risk assessments, and stakeholder engagement efforts promoting public understanding of NPBT.
