The Vision for A Clean Planet

The EU goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80–95% by 2050, presents a vision to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 through a fair transition encompassing all sectors of the economy. Significant investments need to be made in new low-carbon technologies, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and grid infrastructure to achieve these goals.

To become energy efficient, it’s imperative. About two thirds of the energy should come from renewable sources. Our energy system has not yet been designed to deal with such challenges. By 2050, it must be transformed. Only a new energy model will make our system secure, competitive and sustainable in the long-run.

Because investments are made for a period of 20 to 60 years, policies that promote a stable business climate which encourages low-carbon investments must start being made today. Yet by investing in our energy system, we create jobs, businesses and prosperity. Less energy wastage and lower fossil fuel imports strengthen the economy. Early action saves money later.

Projects addressed to contributing to achieve the goals foreseen in the EU Energy Roadmap are supported by the Horizon 2020 R&D and innovation programme. H2020 will be substituted by Horizonte Europe, the new R&D an Innovation framework programme that will cover the 2021-2027 period and will account with a budget of €100 billion.
